Health & Wellbeing Team’s Self-Care Guide

Back to Students At Home Hub

As 2021 comes to an end, it’s so important to look after our own wellbeing. Spending the holidays in Leeds, possibly away from loved ones, might seem challenging, but there are lots of ways to make it special and enjoyable nonetheless.

Here’s the Health & Wellbeing Team’s self-care guide for the Christmas break:

Get out and walk!

Walking is a powerhouse of wellbeing when it comes to boosting your mood; the exercise can create a big improvement in your self-perception, self-esteem and quality of sleep. That’s why it reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue - and you might find that some of your most creative ideas materialise while you’re walking too. And there’s more good news, Leeds is an excellent city to explore on foot.

Perhaps you’re the type for a casual stroll. If so, great, the city’s all yours!

Leeds Walks

Leeds has more to offer than the city centre and Hyde Park – it’s surrounded by expansive parks, verdant woods and the stunning Yorkshire countryside.

The Christmas break is a great opportunity to put on your hiking boots and discover the greener surroundings of our city – since a walk in nature is the best kind for mental health.

Just 5 minutes in green spaces have a positive impact on mood and self-esteem. Experts recommend around 2 hours per week.

Have a look at 'Hands Down the Best Walks in Leeds' as chosen by Leeds List and explore the nature right on your doorstep.

Get Your Body Moving

If you're feeling a little low, getting your body moving can work wonders. You don't need to be a sporty person or be signed up with a gym to release some endorphins.

Bikes

Cycling

For £2.50 per hour you can rent bikes at Leeds Dock, just a short walk away from the conservatoire. It’s the perfect starting point to cycle along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Put on some gloves and get some fresh, cold wind in your face – and treat yourself with an indulgent hot chocolate from Cafe 164 afterwards. Marshmallows on top, anyone?
