Booking TBA for the Graduation Ceremony in July 2019. Please contact the Graduation team for urgent requests.

You will find useful information about what to do now, such as ordering tickets for you and your guests, gown hire and photography, and information about what happens on the day, for example, timings and how to find Leeds Town Hall.

All graduating students are referred to as 'graduands' at this stage, as you don't officially graduate until your degree has been conferred upon you by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull, or her representative, at the ceremony.

We need to know in advance if you are planning to attend your graduation ceremony in person or not (graduation in absentia), so that we can ensure the seating plan is correct and the ceremony can run smoothly.

Each graduand is automatically entitled to two free guest tickets. Additional guest tickets are charged at a cost of £6 each. We will contact you after the closing date on Friday 27 June 2018 to confirm your allocation.

It is really important that you complete the online booking form, even if you decide not to attend the ceremony, as we need confirmation of your address to post your certificate.

If you have any guests who have access requirements, please let us know, so that we can allocate guest tickets with suitable accessibility.

There is full wheelchair access to Leeds Town Hall and wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities on all floors. A number of spaces in the seating area are reserved for wheelchair users. There is no parking, although there is a dropping-off area at the front of the Town Hall.

Ticket collection

Your guest tickets will be available for you to pick up when you arrive at Leeds Town Hall from 9:00AM on Thursday 26 July 2018.

All graduating students are required to wear academic dress. This is specific to your course and the institution and you should order this online now. The dress code for graduation is smart/formal.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have ordered the correct gowns for your ceremony through the official outfitters, Ede & Ravenscroft. Since this is a formal ceremony, you will not be allowed to graduate in the ceremony if you are not wearing the correct academic dress, and there will be no exceptions to this.

You have the opportunity to have professional photographs taken in your academic dress on the day of the ceremony. Our official photography partner is Ede & Ravenscroft who set up a studio in Leeds Town Hall.

Gowns and photography are ordered online through the Ede & Ravenscroft website. You will need to select Leeds College of Music as your Institution and provide your Student ID Number (XXX00000000), Surname and Email Address.

Subsequently, select the date of your ceremony using the online form. You will then be asked to set-up an account, enter details of your degree and provide your appropriate measurements.

Gowns are delivered to Leeds Town Hall on the day of the ceremony and a member of the Ede & Ravenscroft team will be on hand to help you with robing.

Prices for gown, hood and cap

£45 Foundation Degree, BA
£51 PGDip, MA, MMus

Please order 21 days (Thursday 5 July 2018) before the ceremony to avoid disappointment. Be aware that if you do not order online in advance you will have to pay substantially more for an outfit on the day. Stock cannot be guaranteed on the day as gowns are strictly available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Gown hire and photography is provided by third-party company Ede & Ravenscroft. (Leeds College of Music is not responsible for pricing and terms and conditions of hire/sale).

What do I wear underneath my gown?

For male graduands this should be a shirt, tie, smart trousers and shoes (not trainers). For female graduands we recommend blouses, skirts, trousers, or formal dresses and shoes. International students who would like to wear their own national dress are very welcome to do so. Please note denim should not be worn. Any graduand who does not comply with the dress code may not be admitted to the ceremony.

On the day of graduation you may find that it takes time to become familiar with wearing your gown, hood and cap. It is important that the rest of your clothing and footwear are comfortable. During the ceremony you will be required to walk up and down stairs within Leeds Town Hall to be presented. We strongly recommend that you wear comfortable footwear. If you will be wearing high heels or dress shoes with shiny soles, please ensure you feel confident wearing them to walk up and down stairs.

Leeds Town Hall

Leeds Town Hall is a Grade 1 listed building and was built by Cuthbert Brodrick after a competition to build the Town Hall was held in 1852.

The Town Hall was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858 and is home to an impressive 3-manual organ, the largest of its kind in Europe, built by Gray and Davidson.

Leeds Town Hall seats 1550.

Address and location

Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 3AD

Leeds Town Hall is conveniently located in the centre of Leeds, next to Leeds Central Library and Leeds City Art Gallery. It is a five minute walk from both the rail and bus stations and a 10 minute drive from the M1 and M62 motorways.

Car parking

The nearest secure parking is available at Q-Park The Light (Dudley Way, Leeds, LS1 8TL), just five minutes walk from Leeds Town Hall.

If travelling by car, we advise to leave as much time as possible for parking.

A number of free parking spaces are reserved for blue badge-holders at the front of Leeds Town Hall. Details of how to request a free parking space will be sent out in July.

Access to the hall is through the doorway at pavement level directly by these spaces. There is a lift to all floors and accessible toilets on the ground and first floors. A number of spaces in the seating area are reserved for wheelchair users. A closed loop system for the hard of hearing is in operation at Leeds Town Hall.

There are many restaurants and bars in the vicinity of Leeds Town Hall.

Registration and collection of guest tickets

This will take place in the main entrance foyer of the Town Hall from 9:00AM. Please enter by the main steps at the front of the building.

This will take place in the Crypt between 9:30AM and 1:00PM. You are welcome to arrive any time between these hours. Gowns should be returned to the Crypt following the ceremony.

The photography studios will also be open from 9:30AM and the reception desk will be in the Brodrick Bar. The studios will be situated in the Cohen, Corson and Reed Rooms across the corridor. The photography studios will also remain open after the ceremony for a short period.

Please note that there are no refreshments available prior to the ceremony in Leeds Town Hall.

To avoid congestion we would ask that you leave Leeds Town Hall once you have collected your gown and had your photographs taken. There are a number of restaurants and coffee shops in close proximity.

Graduand seating

Graduands will be seated on the orchestral/choir risers behind the stage and there will be marshals on duty to direct you to your seats. When you have received your degree you will return to your seat on the risers. Marshals will be on hand to direct you the right way. Anyone performing in the ceremony will be notified in advance with instructions.

Guest seating

For guests the doors of the Victoria Hall and Balcony will open at 1:15PM. We request that guests are all seated 20 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. There will be a pre-ceremony performance in the hall by a student ensemble for your entertainment.

At the end of the ceremony graduates will follow the academic procession off the stage and out of the hall. Guests should remain where they have been seated until the procession has left the hall.

After the ceremony there will be refreshments for graduates and their guests.

We anticipate that proceedings will conclude between 4:00PM and 4:30PM. Please allow time to return your gowns and exit Leeds Town Hall when you are planning onward journeys or booking dinner.

Finding your way around Leeds Town Hall

On the day there will also be plenty of staff around to direct you.

Even though you will not receive your results until the beginning of July you need to complete the booking form to indicate whether or not you will be attending the ceremony and how many tickets you require.

In the unlikely event that you do not obtain your degree, you will be able to get a refund from Ede & Ravenscroft for gown hire and photography.
