Summer Music Academy

New for 2018 our Summer Music Academy will offer students, who are about to enter Year 13, the opportunity to attend a four-day series of classes and experiences at Leeds College of Music.* 

Students who complete the summer music academy and go on to successfully apply to an undergraduate course at Leeds College of Music will receive a reduction in the UCAS tariff points required for entry.

 The Summer Music Academy will offer 3 pathway options: 

  • Classical Music
  • Jazz
  • Popular Music (Including elements of Songwriting and Folk Music) 

*Supervised accommodation and social programme is available at an additional cost for students who require it.

During the Summer Music Academy students will have the opportunity to select from a variety of workshops such as: 


  • Opportunity to work with a professional composer or focus on the required skills for grade 5 theory.
  • Notation, Harmony and Scales
  • Creating musical ideas and developing musical material
  • Form and structure
  • Writing for different instruments 

Ensemble and Solo performance 

  • How to run an effective ensemble rehearsal
  • Improvisation
  • How to manage performance anxiety and develop confidence
  • Practice strategies to get the most from your practice time,
  • Playing with character and expression
  • Working with an accompanist
  • How to prepare for auditions 

How to be successful with HE applications and interviews 

  • Writing a personal statement
  • What are the admissions officers looking for?
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Choosing the right course
  • Preparation and interview technique

The week will culminate in a performance showcase for family and friends.
