Lauren Rycroft - BA (Hons) Music (Popular)

2016 saw Popular Music Student, Lauren Rycroft, support songwriter Newton Faulkner on a UK tour. Meanwhile, she has been building a firm following in the North – gaining support from BBC Introducing West Yorkshire, Lincoln and Nottingham.

In 2017 her successes continued with Lauren joining the official Leeds College of Music showcase on The Cavern Stage at Sound City in Liverpool.

What has been the most important thing you’ve learned at LCoM?

The most important lesson I have learnt since first joining Leeds College of Music is that you really get back what you put in to anything. The harder you work and more committed you are to a project, the better it will do - always!

What are you planning on doing after graduation?

I plan to continue to grow my following as an artist by touring across the country and releasing music. Alongside this, I plan to give 1-1 vocal classes to individuals who are passionate about music and help people where I can.

Is there anything you've encountered over the last few years that has really made you push yourself as a musician?

Before coming to Leeds College of Music, I had no experience playing with other musicians and my musical theory knowledge was limited.

Collaborating in bands for assignments and for my own personal enjoyment has taught me the importance of being able to communicate musically with a group. I definitely pushed myself out of my comfort zone by playing with people more skilled than I am.

What is the best piece of advice you've been given at LCoM?

Opportunities can come from anywhere and anyone. The person you met once in a lift could be your future booking agent.

What has been the best project / opportunity you've had during your degree?

I think developing and launching myself as an artist has been the best project I have worked on since being at LCoM. Before moving to Leeds and starting at the conservatoire I had achieved none of the things I now perceive as my greatest achievements - such as having my own headline UK Tours, supporting artist such as Newton Faulkner & Janet Devlin and releasing and having my debut EP broadcast nationally on BBC Radio.

[Editor's Note: Lauren was also part of our showcase at Liverpool Sound City, highlights of her performance can be seen in the video below]

What has been the biggest challenge and how has this helped you develop?

My biggest challenge has been time and money management. Juggling a degree, being a full time gigging musician and any part time work has been difficult! Being a musician from the start requires most of your time and money and I've learnt to adjust my lifestyle to prioritise music.

What is your favourite LCoM Memory?

Being given the opportunity to go to Amsterdam on a writing trip. AMAZING.

What advice would you give to others thinking of applying to your course at LCoM?

Do it!
