Course Overview

This five-day course will focus on composition, orchestration, musical awareness and production. Subject areas will include the conceptualisation and creation of music for the moving image, complemented by practical composition sessions in dedicated Apple Mac labs. The final day of the summer school will give you the option to showcase your work on ‘the big screen’ and receive detailed feedback from your expert tutors. This can be work you have written whilst on the course or it can be music you have written before.

What You Will Learn

You will study a wide range of films; in previous years participants have studied music from classic films, such as Road to Perdition, Gladiator and The Shawshank Redemption. The course fee includes access to our facilities to enable you to develop your compositions. This includes evening access to our dedicated Mac Labs until 8PM Monday - Thursday. You will have the opportunity to write for the moving image in your Mac Lab sessions and can choose from our library of films. You will be able to access sample libraries and receive tuition in how to manipulate sounds and samples to create professional-sounding film scores.

Who is it for?

We welcome a range of participants on this course. Previous course participants have included student composers, teachers, those who have a general interest in film music, and those who have just wanted to know a bit more about the process of writing for film.
