Our Conducting Summer School offers the opportunity to develop your conducting skills in a collaborative and friendly environment.

Course Overview

Our Conducting Summer School offers the opportunity to develop your conducting skills in a collaborative and friendly environment.  As well as covering score preparation, basic baton and rehearsal techniques you will have opportunities to conduct several small ensembles. You will receive practical tuition and tailored feedback from Ben and other guest lecturers, as well as receiving a video of your podium time to further aid your development as a conductor.

Guidance and tuition will be provided by professional conductor Ben Crick whose international CV includes working with, among many, the English National Philharmonic Orchestra and Skipton Building Society Camerata, which he founded in 2004. He has conducted many celebrated soloists including Tasmin Little, Dame Emma Kirkby, Raphael Wallfisch, Jennifer Pike, Nicholas Daniel and Peter Donohoe.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be able to read music
  • Some experience, however minimal, of performing in orchestras and/or choirs

  • A baton (if you have one)
  • Pencil/pen
  • Paper to make notes on
  • USB Stick
  • A copy of each of the below scores

Repertoire Covered

During the course you will be working on a variety of repertoire:

  • E. Elgar, Symphony No' 1
  • E. Elgar, Cello Concerto
  • C. V. Stanford, 3 Motets
  • M, Arnold, Brass Quintet No' 1
  • R. V. Williams, Variations on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

You are expected to aquire these scores, and the better you know these works the easier it will be to fully engage in the course.

Concessions

Current full-time LCoM students and staff receive a discount of 50% off the full course fee and LCoM alumni receive a discount of 10% off the full course fee on all short course fees above £30. Full-time students from other institutions receive 50% discount on all community ensemble bookings and 10% discount on all short course fees above £30. Please note that in all instances we will ask for proof of eligibility.

LCoM Students/Staff

To claim your discount, please ensure you complete the relevant field on the booking form, and enter your LCoM student or staff ID number.  This will reduce the fee online.

This number will be verified on our record system before we confirm your booking.

LCoM Alumni

To claim your discount, please ensure you complete the relevant field on the booking form, and enter the year that you graduated at LCoM. This will reduce the fee online. 

Students in full-time education (other institutions)

To claim your discount, please ensure you complete the relevant field on the booking form, and enter your student ID. This will reduce the fee online. Please bring your student card with you on the first day of your course.
