When will I receive my course dates?

Once you have enrolled on your course you will receive an email which will include your course dates

When will I get my ID card?

ID card photos are taken on the first date of your course. You will need to arrive 30 minutes before the start time of your course.

What should I do if I’m a returning student and need a new ID card photo?

You can have a new ID card photo taken on the first date of your course. If this is something you would like, please email  so we can organise a time.

Which course shall I choose?
Can I get one to one instrumental lessons through Short Courses?

Unfortunately the Short Course department cannot offer one to one instrumental lessons.

I can’t afford to pay for my course all in one go, what can I do?

We offer a direct debit scheme, which allows you to pay for your course in smaller, more manageable amounts. All you need to do is tick the relevant box on your booking form and make the deposit payment. We will then contact you with the relevant forms which you will need to complete by hand and return to:

What happens if I change my mind about my course?

Sometimes you may find that the course you have booked isn’t the right one for you. In this case we can transfer you onto a different course of your choosing. If you are within our refund policy we can issue you with a full refund. You can view our refund policy here:

Can I get a certificate of attendance?

Certificates of attendance are available upon request. You must have an attendance of at least 70% to qualify for this.

I have missed the booking deadline, can I still join?

Booking deadlines are normally one week before the course is due to start, although this may differ based on the course type. If you have missed the deadline, please email us to check if there are still spaces:

My course has been cancelled, what happens now?

In the unlikely event of a course being cancelled, we will administer a full refund. If it’s an evening class and one class is cancelled, we will try to make it up at the end of the course or create an additional lesson.

Once you have completed your booking form, you will be required to pay the course fee in order to secure your place on the course.

Meet the Team

Karen Gourlay - Head of Junior LCoM and Short Courses

Karen initially studied jazz at Leeds College of Music, she continued her studies at the University of Leeds and has a first class honours degree in music. Awarded a distinction for the MMus in composition,she studied with Sam Hayden, Martin Watkins, and most influentially, Philip Wilby. She has just completed MSc at the University of Huddersfield in Technology Enhanced Learning. Her research project looked at how instrumental teachers can use technology to support teaching and learning. 

As a composer, Karen is a former winner of the Yorkshire Composers' Competition and her work has been performed internationally, including performances at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Sydney Festival, the Royal College of Music, and the USA. She was commissioned by Youth Music to write an ensemble scheme for the so called 'endangered species' group of instruments.  Breathless for low flute quartet has been performed performed in Chicago, Warwick and Washington DC. Dreamscape for flute and guitar is recorded by Carla Rees and David Black  and broadcast on Radio 3. Her work is published by Forton Music and Tetractys Publishing

Kate Tanner - Short Courses Manager

Kate Tanner (BMus) is the Short Courses Manager. She looks after the programme of short courses, evening classes, community ensembles and summer schools at Leeds College of Music. Originally from Devon, Kate’s love of music began as a young chorister, and later Deputy Head Girl Chorister, of Exeter Cathedral. Kate graduated from Huddersfield University in 2010 with a first class honours degree in Music. She plays the piano and bassoon, and has studied under teachers Joan Dixon and David Baker. She has been based in Yorkshire since 2007, having moved to Leeds after her degree. Since graduating, she has worked for Manchester Camerata in the Learning and Participation team, as part of the Events team for the Lake District Summer Music Festival, and for Guide Dogs UK, before taking up her role at LCoM.
