Electronic Music Production Summer School

Want to create your own electronic music, but don't know where to begin? Struggling to develop your ideas into a full track? We've got the course for you!

  • Starts:
  • Duration: Monday 24 - Friday 28 July 2017; 10am - 5pm
  • Venue: Leeds College of Music
  • Fee: £440
  • Age: 16+
  • Tutors: Adam Fennell
  • Study Mode: Summer School

What is included?

Tips, Tricks & Techniques: Participants will explore numerous techniques to create, edit and manipulate audio within an electronic music context. Using industry-standard software in Ableton 9 and Komplete 10, participants will learn how to program drums, manipulate samples and create synth patches tailored to their individual tastes.

Composition: The best way to learn these techniques is to put them in context, and augment them with composition tactics. As we learn new ways to create music, each participant will incorporate them into their own composition. Participants will explore a variety of compositional techniques, including how to break the ’16-bar loop syndrome’.  We will also deconstruct existing tracks to figure out why they work so well.

The Tech Stuff (Mixing & Mastering): Putting together a track is great, but lets make it sound good too. We will look in-depth at mix tools and techniques such as EQ, compression and reverb alongside creative mixing tips and tricks to represent their track in the best light. Through critical listening and analysis, participants will delve into the mix process, harnessing the power of Ableton and Komplete before taking their projects into the dedicated 5.1 mixing room, tweaking their mixes and learning the basics of mastering, finishing their tracks with an analog mastering session.

Who is it for?

The course has been created for people who are eager to start creating their own electronic music.  You might have experimented with software already, but would benefit from support from others in a similar situation and experienced guidance to boost your music making. As a group, we will share tips, tricks and resources, and take our work into a purpose-built listening environment to listen in great detail and master our music. The core of the course is having fun - enjoying developing ideas into full tracks, learning & understanding the processes behind the music we enjoy along the way.
