Described as a “talent to watch” (OffBeat Magazine) with a “highly unique style possessing great technical facility” (All Out Guitar), German born guitarist and composer Ulrich Elbracht studied music at the Hochschule fuer Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany, under the tuition of Christian Rover and Mike Walker. After moving to England in 2001, Ulrich quickly established himself as an “outstanding local based guitarist”, much in demand for his “intelligent and sensitive playing” (NW Jazzworks).

As well as lecturing in performance at Leeds College of Music since 2003, Ulrich has a strong passion for composition. A number of these works have been performed, published, broadcasted internationally and recorded by artists including the Real Book North West Band.

As a member of the European Union Quartet, Ulrich performs “compositions that sound elegant, refined and inspired” (Jazzflits), and is featured on both their critically acclaimed albums. ‘EU4’ (GLP Label 2008) and ‘Dark Peak’ (Dutch O.A.P Label 2011) are described by Jazzenso as demonstrating “intense ensemble playing, with room for individual ideas..”  Over the past 5 years, the group has performed at many renowned jazz venues throughout England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Ulrich is also currently involved in another project called ‘The Magic Beans’.

With them, he has recorded two critically acclaimed albums, (‘The Magic Beans’ 2009 and ‘Anything You Can Dream’ 2015). The latest release was described as “an album that shows not only raw musical talent across the genres and innovation in lyrics and melody. ‘Anything You Can Dream’ is as fun and upbeat as it is solemn and sultry” (Music Muso reviews).

In 2016, Ulrich performed with Manchester Pop band ‘The Slow Show” at various festivals across Europe incl. ‘Secret Garden Party’ UK, ‘Winterthurer Musifestwochen’ in Switzerland, ‘Haldern Pop’ in Germany. The band also performed live on Virgin Radio for the Edith Bowman show.

Together with acclaimed Bass Player Zoltan Dekany, Ulrich founded UZ2. The duo released their first album in 2015. ‘So It Begins’ is an album “full of compositional and improvisational riches” (Jazz in York). As well as having a strong youtube presence, the duo performed at the Manchester Jazz Festival as well as ‘Bass Europe’ in Prague.

As a freelance musician Ulrich regularly performs with some of the most highly respected musicians in the UK such as Neil Yates, Joel Purnell, Ed Jones, Zoltan Dekany and Eryl Roberts. He has also worked with European performers such as Iman Spaargaren, Peter Ehwald, Klaas van Donkersgoed,  Jens Dueppe and Zzolt Bende.
