Miriam Ast is an award-winning German jazz vocalist and composer living in London. She is frequently praised by critics for her mature vocal sound as well as for her improvisations like an instrument.

In July 2018 Miriam released her debut album ‘Secret Songs’ with pianist Victor Gutierrez to critical acclaim, featuring the legendary British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann.

The duo won the Best Vocalist Award at the Bucharest International Jazz Competition 2017 and performed as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2018. Currently they are on a European tour, playing gigs in Germany, England and Czech Republic this year.

In 2017, Miriam was a semi-finalist in the renowned Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition.

Miriam directs her own band for which she writes original music inspired by folk, modern jazz and free improvisation. She has performed at the Vortex Jazz Club, Pizza Express Jazz Club, the 606 Club and most recently at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.

Besides her performance work, Miriam has been a senior lecturer for jazz voice at Leeds College of Music since September 2017 as well as teaching singing at King’s College London and University of Leeds.

In July 2016 Miriam graduated with an MA with distinction in jazz voice from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, London, having been taught by renowned British jazz singer Norma Winstone, vocalist Nia Lynn, composer and arranger Pete Churchill and British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann.

Previously, Miriam graduated with two Bachelor degrees of Music, majoring in jazz singing and jazz saxophone from Hochschule für Musik Mainz, Germany in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

From 2012-2013 Miriam was as member of the vocal ensemble of the prestigious German National Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and she has been a member of the acclaimed London Vocal Project since 2015, performing the world-premiere of the legendary ‘Miles Ahead project’ in New York in 2017.

Miriam performs regularly in Germany, collaborating with different German jazz musicians as well as frequently performing concerts with the German band ‘Klezmers Techter’.
