Leeds College of Music has unveiled ambitious plans to expand their degree course provision into the broader area of performing arts, starting with the launch of BA (Hons) Musical Theatre in September 2019.

Musical Theatre

Building on 50 years’ experience in delivering relevant, progressive music education, Musical Theatre will be the latest addition to LCoM’s broad portfolio of degrees. Housed within the School of Performance, the launch of Musical Theatre signifies a new direction for expansion at the conservatoire.

Professor Joe Wilson, Vice Principal & Director of Curriculum for LCoM says; “We are incredibly excited to build upon our reputation and expertise in providing specialist music education at degree level and expand our course provision to the area of performing arts, starting with BA (Hons) Musical Theatre.”

The three year triple-threat course will focus on singing, acting and dance for Musical Theatre, spanning a diverse repertoire from classic and legit Musical Theatre through to contemporary and community-focussed works.

The course has been developed closely alongside practitioners from our neighbours, the nationally acclaimed Leeds Playhouse.

“We’re excited about this Musical Theatre degree course which will be delivered right on our doorstep, and we can see great benefits for Leeds in providing this level of training," said James Brining, Artistic Director / Joint CEO of Leeds Playhouse. "As a theatre with a reputation for making musical theatre of the highest quality we look forward to working in partnership with LCoM and the tutors and students at all levels of the course over the next few years."

The new direction comes at an exciting stage in the development of the conservatoire and the regeneration of Leeds’ cultural quarter, Quarry Hill, where LCoM resides. The course will be housed in dedicated specialist facilities in the brand new arts campus, just minutes from the main Leeds College of Music building.

“Leeds is the only city outside of London to have its own internationally renowned Ballet and Opera companies." adds Professor Joe Wilson. "LCoM is surrounded by an incredible array of leading culture and arts institutions providing an inspirational environment in which to study Musical Theatre.”

With a panoramic view over the city landscape, the top floor of this £60m campus will house bespoke performing arts facilities for our new suite of theatre courses. Developed by industry leaders The Studio People, state-of-the-art dance and drama studio spaces will sit alongside a 180-seat purpose-built theatre for student performances. Three additional music ensemble rooms, a break-out learning zone for students and a green room will complete this exciting addition to the conservatoire’s award-winning facilities.
