J Frisco selected for Jazz North Introduces

By Kath Hartley |

Leeds College of Music alumni trio J Frisco have been selected for pioneering initiative Jazz North Introduces, which aims to nurture rising young Jazz talent in the North of England. Now in its 5th round, Jazz North Introduces offers young musicians under 25 high profile showcase opportunities at major Jazz festivals across the North, as well as support and advice in self-promotion.

The free experimental trio J Frisco are Jemma Freese (Keyboards - Popular with Jazz Combined Degree), Lara Jones (Saxophone - Jazz with Classical Combined Degree) and Megan Roe (Guitar - Popular Music Degree), all three of whom graduated from Leeds College of Music this summer. The band combine art and poetry with improvised music, aiming to change perceptions and break down boundaries through improvisation.

Raring to get going with the project, J Frisco said; "We feel so grateful to the people that have supported us and we are so excited for the ways Jazz North will help shape our journey over the next year."

Alongside J Frisco, Manchester-based experimental Jazz quartet Andchuck have also been selected to take part in the scheme.

The successful bands were chosen by a panel of experienced musicians, promoters, educators and Jazz North staff, who were on the lookout for musical excellence in terms of musicianship, creativity, innovation and potential.

Both of the selected bands will receive a package of help as part of the Jazz North Introduces scheme, including payment and expenses for the gigs, a photo-shoot and assistance in creating an electronic press kit. Each band will be offered six showcase performances at leading northern jazz festivals during 2017-2018.

Nigel Slee from Jazz North said; “We're looking forward to working with J Frisco and we're pleased to be able to showcase their adventurous original music to audiences across the North of England.”
