Space Accessibility Statement

Space is the name of the virtual learning environment at Leeds Conservatoire. We run a Moodle installation with a custom design to match our brand. Much of the accessibility functionality is part of the core Moodle system, but we also extend that functionality with custom code.

Content

Academic and support staff are responsible for populating Space with relevant content and information and are given the freedom to customise pages to meet their needs. This means that the accessibility of information on Space is varied.  We have undertaken a preliminary audit and found that some content on Space may not meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, including:

  • Documents may not be fully accessible to screen reader software
  • Documents and content on Space may not be formatted appropriately; for example, the use of headings is inconsistent
  • Many images within documents do not have alternative text descriptions or include decorative markings where necessary
  • Some documents may not meet colour contrast requirements

Due to the extensive range of content and staff responsible for it, we believe that it would be a disproportionate burden for us to modify all the content on Space to ensure that it meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards. However, our is aim is that all new and updated content will meet these standards.

We are actively providing staff training and development on the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. We are also developing document and content templates for staff to use that meet accessibility standards.
