Kevin Holbrough

Lecturer

Born in East Yorkshire in 1974, Kevin (PGDipLCM) began his playing career at the age of thirteen. Classically trained he began performing in many well known Colliery Brass Bands of Yorkshire, playing concerts and competitions throughout the UK. In 1994 he began studying Jazz and Classical Music at Leeds College Of Music, where he studied both Trombone and Piano. During this period he studied under Multi Instrumentalist Al Wood and Halle Orchestra Bass Trombonist Neville Roberts, he has also studied with Dennis Rollins.

Upon graduation in 1997 Kevin spent three years working in the show bands of American Cruise Liners, based in Miami, P&O Princess and Holland America Line. Within this time he completed contracts in over 40 countries. After completing such contracts he then went on to spend a further two years in Europe touring extensively with the West End Show “The Official Tribute To The Blues Brothers” and Broadway Musical “42nd Street”. After completing European tours Kevin returned to the UK to pursue a freelance career and further work in music education.

He is currently a busy freelance trombonist, session musician and educator. Alongside his busy performing and teaching schedule Kevin currently lectures in Jazz Trombone at Leeds College Of Music.

With an ever expanding discography, Kevin has performed with many highly reputable pop artistes, singers, bands and jazz artists throughout the UK and Europe at major venues, clubs and many Jazz festivals, including Glastonbury, London Palladium and The Royal Albert Hall.

These have included UK tour dates and performances with Indie band Embrace, The Bee Gees, Ronan Keating, PP Arnold, Englebert Humperdinck, Joe Longthorne, Tony Hadley, Peter Grant, Martha Reeves, Martin Fry and ABC. Other performing credits include touring West End shows Legally Blonde, Hairspray with Michael Ball, The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas, The Judy Garland story “End Of The Rainbow” and Christmas Carol.

On the jazz scene Kevin has toured and performed throughout the country at major jazz festivals with his own quintet, quartet, Dennis Rollins’ Boneyard, NYJO, Salsa band Descarga, La Gran Descarga, Andy Prior Big Band, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra UK, Jamil Sheriff Big Band, Jamil Sheriff Octet, Wigan Jazz Club Orchestra and The Ronnie Bottomley Big Band.

He is featured on both highly praised albums of Jamil Sheriff Octet, “Daydreams”, “Backchat” and has a session musician has recorded with numerous big bands, jazz ensembles, Joe Longthorne and BBC Cbeebies hit programme Rastamouse. Festival work has also included performances with jazz artistes such as Phil Woods, Joe LaBarbera, James Morrison, Cleo Laine and John Dankworth.

Other groups that Kevin is currently busy writing and performing with his own quintet featuring other LCoM lecturers Rob Mitchell, Jamil Sheriff and Gary Jackson. Other Jazz projects which he can also be seen performing are The Jamil Sheriff Big Band, Toby Greenwoods “We Free Kings”, The Derek Harris Septet, and "B3 Horn Section".
