Programme to include Schubert’s Schwanengesang, extracts from Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel, and songs by Sibelius.
Simon Keenlyside baritone
Joseph Middleton piano
One of the world’s most sought after and charismatic singers, Simon Keenlyside is noted for his highly charged performances, probing intellect and rich baritone voice. Tonight, he opens the 2017 Leeds Lieder Festival with Joseph Middleton in an exploration of Schubert’s Schwanengesang, that towering non-cycle, which explores the theme of a distant and unattainable beloved, described by Schubert’s publisher Haslinger as ‘the final blooms of Schubert’s creative muse’. To open the recital, Keenlyside and Middleton perform extracts from that great Romantic English cycle Songs of Travel in which Stevenson had composed the words of the opening song ‘to an air of Schubert.’
