How to apply for Joseph Stones House
LS2 7PD
Applications to live in the College's on-site accommodation for 2011/12 are now being accepted.
You will need to be 18 no later than Sunday 11 September 2011 to qualify to live in Joseph Stones House.
Please read this before completing the application form
Joseph Stones House is the student accommodation, purpose built for Leeds College of Music, but owned and managed by UNITE. If you wish to apply for a room there, it is important that you follow the correct procedure in order to secure your place.
There are different procedures, according to whether you are a new student with an unconditional or conditional offer, or if you are an existing student already at the College.
Please read the section that applies to you, carefully. You should also read the leaflet that describes the facilities available, and the allocation policy, before applying. If you have any queries about this process, please contact Anne Best on 0113 222 3514.
Current students and new students with unconditional firm offers
- If you are already at Leeds College of Music and continuing on the same course, or if you will definitely be coming to Leeds College of Music in September, you should complete the application form in full, as soon as possible.
- All applicants must have a guarantor. Please ask the person first, before putting their name on the form – they will be required to sign the tenancy agreement.
- The form MUST be returned to:
Anne Best
Student Advisor
Room 502
Leeds College of Music Leeds
LS2 7PD
- Your application form will then be forwarded to UNITE, who will send the tenancy documents to you. You and your guarantor will need to sign and return these to UNITE, not to college, within the stated period. ( Please read carefully the terms of the UNITE Cancellation Policy when you receive the tenancy agreement).
- UNITE will also send you all the details about the moving in arrangements.
- After the tenancy is signed, UNITE will be responsible for your accommodation, and all enquiries should be directed to them. They will give you a contact number for any queries when they send the documents.
New students with conditional firm offers
- Please think carefully before you apply to live in Joseph Stones House if you have a conditional offer. If you fail to make the grades and you cancel, you will have to pay an administration charge of £50 or more. You should only apply for accommodation if you have (or are intending to) put Leeds College of Music as your FIRM CHOICE. We cannot reserve rooms for applicants who are unlikely to be coming to Leeds College of Music.
- Complete the application form and return it to Anne Best at Leeds College of Music (address in section 1), as soon as possible.
- You will be allocated a flat and room number, meeting your preferences if possible. We will write to you with confirmation of a provisional offer of accommodation, as soon as possible.
- If you want to be on the same corridor as friends then please all try and apply at the same time. Being together can not be guaranteed, but we will do our best.
- Your application form will then be forwarded to UNITE and they will send tenancy documents to you. Please read carefully the terms of the UNITE Cancellation Policy, which will affect you if you fail to get your required grades.
- If you will not be able to come to LCM after all, you must contact Anne Best as soon as you can before the end of August.
- UNITE will send you all the information you require on dates and arrangements for moving in etc.
Further points to note – all applicants
- Once you have signed your tenancy this is a legally binding contract.
- The starting date for tenancies will be confirmed on the tenancy document – this means that you can move in any time after this date.
- Keys will not be issued until the first instalment has been paid in cleared funds. The tenancy documents will explain this.
- You will need to provide your own bedding, towels, crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. We would advise you to wait until you have moved in to buy your kitchen gear – get together with flat mates to reduce the costs. You won’t need 6 complete sets of pans, for example!
- You will need a TV licence if you have television receiving equipment in your room. This includes a computer which receives TV pictures www.tvlicensing.co.uk/students
- If you apply for a room and Joseph Stones House is full, we will keep a small waiting list in case of vacancies at the last minute, but you will also be supplied with a list of alternatives. Usually there are no more than about 10 withdrawls, so most people will be better applying to other places if they haven’t got a room.
- If you have a home address in Leeds, we will not allocate you a room initially, however if there are vacancies after term starts, we will take local applicants.
- Strictly no animals/pets/insects/reptiles allowed! (As per tenancy agreement)
- Please read all documents very carefully, and keep everything for future reference!
