Video: violin virtuoso performs with Caroline Jaya-Ratnam

One of the brightest young stars in classical music, Charlie Siem, appeared live at Leeds College of Music on 23 January to perform works by Mozart and Brahms, alongside pianist Caroline Jaya-Ratnam. We streamed the event live on the internet, and you can watch a replay using the viewer above (performance begins at 00:01:00).

Charlie has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed alongside conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Yuri Simonov, Sir Roger Norrington, Ed Gardner, Libor Pesěk and Michal Nesterowicz. And in addition to his work with major musicians and brands, Charlie has also been featured in Italian Vogue and Vogue Diaries.

He has a six year recording history, and has revived the age-old violinistic tradition of composing virtuosic variations of popular themes, which he has done alongside artists including Bryan Adams, Jamie Cullum and The Who. Most recently Charlie wrote his first piece for string orchestra, ‘Canopy‘ which was recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra and is featuring on his latest CD with Sony Classical.

Charlie originally came to Leeds College of Music in 2012 as a Visiting Professor and continues to do so. See our YouTube channel for a video of his first visit, in which he spent the afternoon rehearsing with students, answering questions and providing instruction and guidance, before performing an evening concert with our Chamber Orchestra in our 350 seat auditorium, The Venue.
