Dr Kathy Dyson was last night named as Jazz Educator of the Year at the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Kathy is Senior Lecturer in Jazz at Leeds College of Music with particular interests in performing, research and teaching. As well as playing guitar professionally and teaching she is also known for her research and is an active and enthusiastic member of the Musicians’ Union. View Kathy's staff profile here
The award ceremony, organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) was held at the House of Commons and hosted by broadcaster Paul Gambaccini. Many MPs, Peers and renowned jazz musicians were present on the night including Ed Vaizy, MP, Stan Tracey, Cleveland Watkiss and Jacqui Dankworth. Guests were treated to a performance by 2009 Jazz Musician of the Year, Phil Robson with vocalist Christine Tobin. The awards are sponsored by music licencing company PPL and Jazz Services and feature nine categories: Jazz Musician of the Year, Jazz CD of the Year, Jazz Ensemble of the Year, Jazz Venue of the Year, Jazz Journalist of the Year, Jazz Broadcaster of the Year, Jazz Publication of the Year, Jazz Education Award, and the Services to Jazz Award. The Nigel Price Trio, winners of Best Jazz Ensemble at last night's awards, features Leeds College of Music alumnus Matt Home on drums. The APPJAG has members from the House of Commons and House of Lords across all political parties. Their aim is to encourage wider and deeper enjoyment of jazz, to increase Parliamentarians’ understanding of the jazz industry, to promote jazz as a musical form and to raise its profile inside and outside of Parliament.
