Sacconi Quartet

Leeds International Chamber Music Season is back for a new series of Masterworks in 2011/2012 - a further exploration of some of the greatest works of the chamber repertoire.

Borodin’s Second String Quartet was written during a summer holiday in 1881 and was presented to his wife as a gift for their anniversary. Borodin represented himself as the cello and his wife Ekaterina as the violin and the whole work is suffused with a deep sense of affection and growing love, perhaps most notably in the sublime third movement nocturne.

Written in 1893 during Dvorak’s time in America when he was feeling homesick, the American quartet has a pervading sense of nostalgia. The second movement lento in particular is infused with the melancholic longing of African American spirituals, a sentiment with which Dvořák identified.
