Yorkshire Young Musicians

Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM) is a new Centre of Advanced Training for exceptionally talented young musicians aged between 8 and 18. It is overseen by a unique partnership comprising Leeds College of Music, Opera North and all sixteen local authority music services in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

With financial support from the government’s Music and Dance Scheme, YYM provides specialist (one-to-one) instrumental tuition and advanced general musicianship training to all who can benefit from it, regardless of their means. Operating initially in Leeds, but subsequently also in other centres across the region, YYM is designed to be accessible to all, and to provide vocational training of the highest quality, delivered in a way which is integrated with local provision, and which enables participants to remain at day schools in their own locality.

Yorkshire Young Musicians is an inclusive scheme. It is open to all, regardless of their means, their social or ethnic background, or whether they have any disability. It is also musically inclusive – designed to identify and nurture exceptional talent in all areas of performance and across a wide range of genres and traditions. The only restrictions are created by the need for all participants to possess the very high levels of musicianship and commitment required to benefit from the scheme, and by the availability of suitable specialist tuition.
