The Foundation Degree in Music and Sound Production for the Moving Image is a two-year full-time or four-year part-time vocational programme of study, developed and delivered in partnership with a range of leading industry practitioners. It aims to provide you with the specialist practical and business skills required for a career in Music and Sound Production for the Moving Image.

The programme has three broad integrated strands of study:

Music Production Skills

This strand enables you to acquire the technical and creative skills, using industry-standard hardware and software that is integral to music production applications in the moving image industries. You will study modules in composition, software environments and sound production for the moving image.

Business and Applied Skills

The business and applied skills strand enables you to acquire the project management, business and entrepreneurial skills required to work in the field of music production for the moving image. You will use the skills to bid for projects provided by the College’s industry partners. All students produce a Professional Development Portfolio throughout the course, allowing them to continually review and evaluate their career plan, and will receive specialist support in the development of job applications, project tender documents, CV's and show-reels.

Contextual

The contextual strand is designed to provide you with a historical, analytical and critical context for your creative work and an understanding of the working practices and technological developments that are essential for a career in the creative industries.

During the programme, you will complete two substantial Industry Guided Projects. These projects will be real ongoing projects being undertaken by the College’s industry partners and you will bid for the right to undertake this work. At the end of the programme, you will complete an extended commercial project, requiring the integration of all of the skills you have acquired. You will work on a commercial project for yourself and complete it to the satisfaction of the client, with appropriate guidance from the course team. You may choose to work alone or set up a small production company with other students on the course.

Facilities

Practical aspects of the course are delivered in the College’s Music Production Suite, comprising 18 Apple Macintosh workstations. You will also have access to the College’s digital recording studios and a range of specialist portable recording equipment.

Digital Audio Editing Suite 1

A suite of 18 Apple Macintosh ProTools/Logic digital audio workstations designed for production work and equipped with commercial audio editing, sampling, synthesis and sound manipulation software.

You will continue to develop the practical skills acquired on the Foundation Degree in Music and Sound Production for the Moving Image, but in the context of more focused academic and creative study. You will undertake a substantial music production project, supported by a written critical evaluation and analysis of the final product.
