The emphasis of this course is on the use of advanced music technology skills for the creation and production of music and sound for a range of contemporary applications, including studio production and composing and producing music for film, television, and new media.

The course is aimed at students with experience in music technology who wish to specialise in the production and composition aspects of this rapidly developing field, and aims to equip you for a variety of career destinations within the music industry.

Year One

The first year of the course focuses on developing the fundamental skills of the three principal strands of music technology: studio production, knowledge of computer-based music production and popular music composition. You will consider the latest digital recording techniques alongside synthesis, sampling and MIDI production techniques. Modules in composition will examine a range of contemporary composition techniques appropriate to popular music, enabling you to produce new work in a broad range of styles and genres. All students also take introductory studies in musicianship and popular music.

Year Two

Alongside continued study in the core areas of studio production and song writing, you will undertake an in-depth examination of the music industry, including contract and copyright law, the recording industry, and the development and impact of music for new media, including the Internet and computer games. A range of optional modules, including electronic music, music for moving image and music pedagogy and social psychology allow you to specialise in areas of particular interest.

Year Three

You will undertake a major production-based project in your chosen area of specialism, for example an album of original material, a soundtrack for moving image. A series of optional modules will enable you to continue the specialist studies you began in Year Two, and may include film and television music production, electroacoustic composition, music for new media, games and Internet music production.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a portfolio of compositions or recordings supported by critical writing and/or a production log.
