The Course

New members are welcome to join the orchestra from Tuesday 25 April for the remainder of the year until Tuesday 13 June. The discounted fee to enrol from April is £85.

Sinfonia is a friendly, welcoming group of adult learners who are passionate about playing classical music. Tutored by conductor Andrew Watkinson, Sinfonia studies three programmes of music each year, with performances for friends and family in an informal setting. This summer term, members will be working on the following repertoire:

Mozart, The Magic Flute Overture
Schumann, Symphony No.3 in E flat Major, Op.97

Sinfonia’s summer performance is on Tuesday 13 June, 8pm in the Recital Room.

Rehearsal Dates

Sinfonia rehearsals run on a Tuesday evening for 30 rehearsals from Tuesday 20 September 2016 - Tuesday 13 June 2017, 7 - 9.30pm each week. Please note there are no rehearsals running on the following dates: 25 October, 13, 20 & 27 December 2016, 14 February, 4, 11 & 18 April, 30 May 2017.

New Members

We recruit throughout the year for our Sinfonia.  Running from September - June, Sinfonia meets for weekly evening rehearsals, and culminates in a public performance at the end of each term. If you would like to join the Sinfonia from April, we would love to hear from you. We are particularly keen to hear from string players, and also have vacancies for 1st horn, 2nd oboe and 2nd bassoon. That said, we welcome interest from any section as we look to grow our membership going forward.

The fee for the remainder of the year from April - June is £85 (annual membership fee £250) which includes access to our fantastic library facilities for the duration of the remaining rehearsals. No audition is required, but Sinfonia aims to provide orchestral experience for players who have achieved a minimum standard of grade 3 (strings) and grade 5 (wind/brass).  Please email to register your interest.

Andrew Watkinson is the conductor of the LCoM Sinfonia orchestra.  Following four years of violin study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he left England to take up a position in the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra.  Highlights included working with Anne-Sophie Mutter, John Ogden, Jaime Loredo and Victoria Mullova along with international conductors.  Other work included the National Opera and Theatre companies, also based in Reykjavik.  After returning to England in 1988 he has pursued a freelance and teaching based career.  Work has included playing in the UK tour of Lloyd Weber’s “Joseph”, ten seasons with the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, and work with freelance groups such as the National Festival and the British Philharmonic Orchestras.  More recently he has toured for two years with Opus 1 Opera and last year saw a short tour with the singer Joe Longthorne culminating in a performance at the London Palladium in May 2015.

Andrew Watkinson’s career makes him perfectly placed to tutor the group. This, combined with a love of directing and tutoring adult learners ensures excellence of direction and education.
