The Course

Rehearsals will take place from Thursday 27 April - Friday 16 June.  New members are welcome to join for the Summer Term.

If you love singing choral music, then this choir is for you. Whether you are new to singing or already have some choral experience, our established choir will enable you to develop your singing skills and work on a wide range of choral repertoire. Previous concerts have included Brahms’ Requiem, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and a programme of folk songs from around the world.

It has been scientifically proven that singing in a choir is good for your health, so come and join in at one of our open rehearsals and see for yourself!

For the summer term, the choir will be working towards a concert on Friday 16 June at St Edmund's Church, Roundhay. Repertoire includes John Rutter’s wonderful cycle of folk song settings, “The Sprig of Thyme” and a selection of mainly British folksongs settings by Bob Chilcott.

Rehearsal Dates

Choral Society rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:15pm.  Please note there are no rehearsals running on the following dates: 6, 13 & 20 April, 1 June 2017.

New Members:

We recruit throughout the year for our Choral Society.  Running from September - June, Choral Society meets for weekly evening rehearsals, and culminates in a public performance at the end of each term. If you would like to join the Choral Society from April we would love to hear from you. All voice types are welcome, and we are always keen to recruit more male voices.

The discounted fee for the Summer term only is £50 (annual membership fee £155) which includes access to our fantastic library facilities for the duration of the course.  No audition is required to join although the ability to read music is essential.

We are running a free open rehearsal on Thursday 27 April 2017 - this rehearsals is open to anyone who is interested in joining our Choral Society, and is a perfect way to experience being a member and to meet like-minded singers. To register your interest, please email shortcourses@lcm.ac.uk

Musical Director:

Martin Cook originally trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he studied piano and piano accompaniment.  After graduating he emigrated to Canada where he worked, for four years as a school music specialist in Newfoundland. It was in this role that he was first noticed as a choral conductor and as a result went on to study choral conducting at Boston University. After returning to the UK he developed his career in teaching, his last post being as Director of Music at The Blue Coat School in Liverpool, but he maintained an active musical career beyond the classroom, both as a pianist and a conductor. His high school choirs toured regularly throughout Europe, performing in Venice, Vienna, Maastricht, Prague, Salzburg and Santander.  For ten years he conducted the Chester Music Society Junior Choir and under his direction they twice reached the semi-finals in “The Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year Competition” and also received awards at the Montreux International Choral Festival and The Riva del Garda International Choral Festival.  From 1997 – 2009 Martin was Musical Director of Sandbach Voices. Under his direction they performed most of the major choral works.

In 2009 Martin was offered an Assistantship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA where he completed a doctoral degree in conducting, conducted the “All Collegiate Choir” and taught conducting to undergraduates. His dissertation: “A Survey of The Sacred Choral and Orchestral works of Sir Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941) probably makes him the world expert on Walford Davies. Before returning to the UK, Martin worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as Director of Music Ministries at Christ Episcopal Church.  He is now working as a freelance conductor and teacher of Piano, Organ and Voice. He presently conducts the LCoM Choral Society, Shrewsbury Choral Society, his own Chamber choir M-16 and Bunbury Church Choir.

Accompanist:

Jenny is the accompanist for Leeds College of Music’s Choral Society. Jenny specialised in piano performance as part of her Master of Music degree and has since built a freelance career as an accompanist in the area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Jenny currently works as an Education accompanist at Opera North, and has worked closely in the past with the Northern Sinfonia Chorus, the Sage Gateshead Chamber choir and the Quay choirs.
