BTEC Extended Diploma

If your initial application is successful, you'll be invited to Leeds College of Music for an audition or interview. Please see the box in the right-hand column for more details and audition guides.

Entry requirements

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music and BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Music

  • Minimum age normally 16; no upper age limit.

  • GCSE Maths grade 4 or above, GCSE English Language grade 4 or above and two additional GCSE subjects at A*-C

  • Two good references (one of which should be academic).

  • If English is not your first language you must have a British Council English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5.

  • In terms of ability on your instrument and your music theory knowledge, you should be around the following level depending on which genre you wish to work in through the ensemble classes:

► Classical: Grade 5 Practical and Theory

► Pop: Grade 5 Practical and Grade 3 Theory

► Jazz: Grade 5 Practical and Grade 4 Theory


BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology and BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Music Technology

  • Minimum age normally 16; no upper age limit.

  • GCSE Maths grade 4 or above, GCSE English Language grade 4 or above and two additional GCSE subjects at A*-C

  • Two good references (one of which should be academic)

  • If English is not your first language you must have a British Council English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5.

  • You should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence that you have experience with music technology.

Auditions and interviews

BTEC

Our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma and 90-Credit Diploma in Music require an audition, while our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma and 90-Credit Diploma in Music Technology involve an interview and a short music technology test.
 
For Music auditions, you will be asked to play two contrasting pieces on your principal instrument of the genre in which you wish to play in ensembles, plus some scales and arpeggios. You will also do some sight reading and sit a short theory paper.
 
Auditions run from January through to the summer; there is no audition fee.
