Adult Learning Grant
Course Fees
Courses are FREE for Home* and EU* students if you meet one or more of the following requirements:
• You are under 19 on 31 August in the year in which you enrol on the course
• You are in receipt of an income based state benefit, or are the unwaged dependant of someone who is, at the time of enrolment. The main benefits are Job Seekers Allowance, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support. Please note that adult learners over 19 are not considered
to be dependants of their parents for benefit purposes, regardless of where they live.
• You are (or your partner is) in receipt of Working Tax Credit with a household income of less than £15,050 (This figure is subject to revision)
• You are in receipt of the Guarantee element of the Pension Credit
• You are an Asylum seeker under the age of 19, and in receipt of assistance under the terms of the Immigration Act 1999
• You are a student studying your first full Level 2 Qualification. Level 2 means 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, or NVQ level 2. The Introductory Certificate is Level 1 and the First Diploma is Level 2
• You are a student studying on your first full Level 3 Qualification and are aged under 25 on 1 September 2010. Level 3 means 2 or more A levels at Grade A to E, or NVQ Level 3
If you do not meet any of these criteria, you will be required to pay tuition fees for your course.
The course fees for Home and EU entering in September 2010 students are as follows:
BTEC National Diploma (all subjects): £1,640
Introductory Certificate in Performing Arts (Sept to Dec): £546**
First Diploma in Performing Arts (Jan to June): £1,094**
** These two courses taken together make up the Foundation course (1 year in total)

Funding
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) - Money to Learn!
Did you know that if you carry on learning after GCSEs, you could receive up to £30 per week to help with things like books, equipment and travel costs? You can even receive extra bonuses if your attendance is good and you work hard!
You should apply for EMA as soon as possible after April 2009. You don’t need to wait until you have a definite offer of a place at College. Your school or Connexions service will be able to supply an application form, or phone the EMA helpline on 0800 121 8989. For more information about EMA visit

Residential Support Scheme
If you are interested in attending a course at Leeds College of Music which is not available locally (i.e. within daily travelling distance) you may be eligible for some financial assistance if you have to live away from home in order to undertake the course. Please note that the majority of Further Education
students would be expected to attend their local College.
This funding helps with the cost of accommodation and the amount you get will normally be determined by your household incomeThe criteria and process for applying for Residential Support is under review for 2010, but currently, to qualify for Residential funding, you must meet the following criteria:
• You are attending a course which is not available within daily travelling distance of your home address
• You are studying on your first full Level 2 or first Level 3 course. i.e. you cannot be funded for studying at a level on which you have already completed
• Your household income in the tax year 2008-2009 was under £30,810 (this amount is subject to revision)
• You are a permanent resident of England only.

Travelling to College - Financial Help
Many students can get extra help with the cost of travelling to College, so don’t let this put you off applying to Leeds College of Music. The help available will depend on your age, where you live and which course you are doing.

Learner Support Funds
The Learner Support Fund is intended to assist students in genuine hardship who may have difficulty in continuing with or completing their course because of financial considerations. All students will be given more information about the Learner Support Fund when they start College.
Yorkshire Ladies Council of Education Award
Each year the College is generously supported by the Yorkshire Ladies Council of Education, who promote educational opportunities for women. Leeds College of Music offers two scholarships of £250 each to female Further Education students studying either Jazz or Music Technology. Women are underrepresented in these subjects and Leeds College of Music is keen to redress the balance.

Childcare
If you have dependent children, you may be eligible for help with the cost of Childcare to enable you to study on your course. Students who are under the age of 20 can apply to the Care to Learn Scheme for childcare funding, and older students may apply directly to the College. Information for Adult Learners
(Aged 19+)
Full-time FE students aged 19 or over who are independent and not supported by their parents or a partner/spouse, should note that there is no ongoing support for living costs other than the specific funds mentioned in this prospectus. Adult Learning Grant
If you are 19 or over and studying on your first full level 2 or level 3 qualification, you could be eligible for the Adult Learning Grant (ALG). Level 2 = 5 or more GCSEs at grade A* to C or GNVQ 2; Level 3 = 2 or more A levels at grade A to E or GNVQ 3.
