SMS Student Profile - Louis

Hello! My name is Louis and I’m 15 years old. I play piano and clarinet, and I like listening or playing pop music, jazz music, classical music, and musical theatre. I’ve played piano since I was 9, and clarinet since I was 11.

A Typical Morning at SMS

After a long drive with my dad (Jonny, who is one of the ensemble tutors here!) I get here at around 8.50am, then go to Composition, my first lesson, at around 9.00am. Composition is fun because we get to learn and write music on programmes like Sibelius and Logic. My next lesson is Ensemble, which is where we play a wide range of songs in a small group of instruments. Last term, I arranged a song myself for our group to play in the winter concert. The last is Workshop, which changes every 2 or 3 weeks usually. It’s where guests come in and teach you about different styles of music, and it involves playing instruments too.

My Favourite Things

My favourite thing about SMS is how you can play your instrument with new people and suggest new ideas. Lots of people enjoy it and every concert at the end of term is a great way to show how the groups have progressed.

SMS has changed me as a musician

SMS has helped me as a musician in many ways; in workshops, it has taught me a lot about different types of music around the world. I also get taught by Ben, my teacher for ensemble last year, to accompany a song on the piano with chords. With my arranging, it has also taught me to make use of resources.

Musical Aims and Ambitions

I’m not sure definitely what I want to do regarding music, but I definitely want to be some kind of composer. Maybe a song writer or classical composer for an orchestra. The idea of teaching also sounds good, and I’d also like to release music on the piano/clarinet to collaborate with other singers or musicians.
