Young Producers

Saturday Music School Tech
(ages 13 - 18)

Saturday Music School Tech for young people who want to learn about music production, and is the only course of its kind in a UK conservatoire.  Students will learn how to record in a music studio, work with MIDI and audio using Logic Pro X and Ableton Live, and record live bands.

The course is an excellent introduction to anyone who may wish to study Music Technology at A-Level or wants to know more about music production techniques.

Topics include:

  • Recording techniques and software

  • Roles in the music industry

  • Location recording

  • Live Sound

  • Music and media

Students have the opportunity to try out their ideas and work closely with staff and other students.  We particularly encourage young female producers to apply; we believe in the importance of addressing the gender imbalance across the industry.

The SMS Tech course takes place every Saturday morning during term time at Leeds College of Music from 9:30am – 1pm.

Is it for me?

SMS Tech students will ideally have some experience of music technology and/or playing a musical instrument, but this is not compulsory.

SMS Tech projects evolve with the students and so the programme changes year on year according to their needs. Students will usually attend for a number of years to develop their knowledge with an extensive programme of activity.

How do I take part?

If you apply to our SMS Tech you are guaranteed an interview.  Prospective students are invited to an informal interview where we can find out more about them and ensure that this is the right course for them.  Before the interview, students will be asked to send an example of their work if they have one, such as an original piece of music/mix/recording so we can hear their ideas.

We normally interview students for a September start but late applications will always be considered if we can accommodate them.

What does it cost?

The fee for the 2016/17 academic year of SMS Tech is £540, which can be paid in instalments by standing order.

We have a bursary fund that supports students and their families dependent on their situation. Bursaries are applied for every academic year once the audition process is complete. This is to allow for any changes in circumstances.

If you'd like more information on the bursary process, don't hesitate to e-mail us. We advise all new applicants to discuss this with us after the audition process is complete.
