Saturday Music School Young Performers

Over 30 weeks a year we deliver ensemble and musicianship training to enthusiastic young musicians between the ages of 9 and 18.  Students build their confidence and make new friends in a supportive and inspirational environment. We believe a range of high quality musical experiences are essential for developing and nurturing talented young musicians.

We have a range of courses for Young Performers specially designed to support different ages and musical ambitions.

SMS Target (9–12 years)

Is your child interested in learning an instrument?

At Saturday Music School at Leeds College of Music, we are running a course called SMS Target in partnership with Leeds Music Education Partnership. The course provides providing high-quality music tuition for children between the ages of 9 and 12 years.

Lessons are available for the following instruments; oboe, bassoon, viola, cello, double bass, French horn, trombone and tuba. Instruments for children attending a Leeds Schools or Academy are available to borrow free of charge from ArtForms.

Children who join SMS Target will benefit from a carefully designed morning of music making, including lessons, workshops, and ensembles, whilst having fun, building confidence and making new friends.

For students attending a state school or academy in Leeds, there is a 50% reduction in fees (actual amount payable £200). Fees can be paid in instalments and we also have a small number of discretionary bursaries available.

Lessons run from 10:00am - 12:45pm on Saturday mornings during term times.

The fee for the 2016/17 academic year of SMS Target is £200 for students attending a state school or academy in Leeds, or for children resident in Leeds but attending an equivalent school in a neighbouring authority. For all other students, the fee is £400.  Discretionary bursaries are available.

SMS EXPERIENCE (9–12 years)

SMS Experience is for young musicians who have been playing or singing for around two years and who are keen to develop their performance skills.

Each week, students will play in a small ensemble or band (classical, rock, pop, or jazz), take a musicianship class, and participate in a workshop to experience different styles of music and to find out how to be successful as a musician.

They will meet other young musicians and have the chance to perform in a professional venue.

A typical timetable would look something like this:

09:00 – 10:00: Workshop
10:15 – 11:15: Ensemble
11:30 – 12:30: Musicianship (Keyboard Skills, Theory or Composition)

The course is designed to support instrumental/vocal lessons which we do not provide as part of the course.  It is a requirement that students have regular one-to-one or group lessons on their instrument/voice outside of SMS.

We have an Open Day for the SMS Experience course on Saturday 20 May 2017.  You can book a place here

The course is designed to support instrumental/vocal lessons which we do not provide as part of the course. It is a requirement that students have regular one-to-one or group lessons on their instrument/voice outside of SMS.

For young musicians interested in SMS Plus, we would like to invite you in to spend a morning with the current SMS Plus group so you can experience what it is like to study with us.  It is a very informal audition with nothing to prepare.  This will take place on Saturday 1 April 2017 from 9:00am - 12:30pm.  If you would like to apply, please complete the online audition form, selecting SMS Plus.

Generation Big Band

Generation Big Band at Leeds College of Music aims to bring together excellence across all generations of the Yorkshire jazz community.

Using cutting edge arrangements the band will consist of alumni who are working professionally in the music business, existing LCoM conservatoire students, along with up and coming young musicians who show great potential. Whilst this is a three-tier ensemble the emphasis is on quality and an opportunity to bring together the best of the best.

We are excited about reaching out especially to the younger jazz community and bringing together musicians who are passionate about improvising. Auditions for 16/17 have now taken place.

The fee for young musicians is £125.

Who are the Young Performers Courses for?

Students will usually have a main interest in classical, pop, rock or jazz, but all that really matters is that our applicants and students show potential and are excited about music-making.

If you have enrolled in Saturday Music School and live within the Leeds Metropolitan area or attend a Leeds School, you may be offered a free place (paid for by ArtForms) in a City of Leeds Youth Music group where one is available.

You are welcome to attend one of our Young Performers concerts; there are concerts and gigs each term. Please visit the What's on pages for more information
