Meet Fran, Mum of SMS Performance student Dan
Music plays a large part in our lives. I’m a classically trained cellist and am involved in music education on a professional level, so have always encouraged my kids to play a musical instrument – although both my sons are into more contemporary musical genres. My younger son, Dan, who is 16, plays electric guitar and is currently in his 6th year at SMS after deciding to audition with his older brother back in 2011! He has benefited enormously from attending SMS and has never complained about getting up each Saturday morning to attend!
Dan's favourite things about SMS
The highlight for of the SMS programme for Dan is that it gives him an opportunity to interact with other like-minded young musicians. The music is an important aspect of the morning, but Dan has also enjoyed the social aspect and meets up with some of his friends from ensemble outside of SMS.
SMS has helped my son's musical development
There isn’t a local ensemble near where we live and so SMS has given Dan the opportunity to play and perform with others and to find an outlet for his musical creativity. The tutors and staff at SMS are absolutely brilliant and get to know your child really well – what they like and what they need to challenge them musically to further their development.
My advice to other parents
I’d definitely recommend anyone who has a child who is musical to think about letting them audition for SMS. Having had two children who have both attended over the last 6 years we have all enjoyed being involved in SMS – attending the concerts, listening to practice sessions and watching our children increase in confidence – both musically and socially. Thank you to the SMS team!
