Life in Leeds

A student-friendly city

In a city with over 200 music venues and an internationally renowned music scene, there is no limit to the performance experience students can gain in Leeds. Situated in the heart of Yorkshire, the city is home to a thriving creative community and teeming with independent recording studios, rehearsal spaces and a network of dedicated musicians, making it the ideal place to be for anyone who is serious about a career in music.

A student-friendly city

Leeds is home to over 80,000 students, who are a respected and celebrated part of the city's culture. Student accommodation is situated throughout central and suburban Leeds, with Headingley the most densely populated student area.

A green city

Leeds contains lots of parks, such as Roundhay and Temple Newsom, and open spaces in the city centre include Millennium Square, City Square, Park Square and Victoria Gardens. The city is situated a short distance from the North York Moors and the Bronte sister’s home village of Howarth, giving plenty of options for countryside excursions.

A cultural city

Leeds is one of only two cities in the UK to have its own opera and ballet companies, Opera North and Northern Ballet. As well as the Grand Theatre and City Varieties, it is home to the UK’s largest regional production theatre, the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Leeds also plays host to numerous festivals, including the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, Leeds International Film Festival, Light Night and the Leeds Festival, which features some of the biggest names in rock and indie music and takes place every year in Bramham Park.

A great place to shop

Leeds is well known as a shopping destination and the city centre contains a large number of indoor and outdoor retail spaces, including the up-market Victoria Quarter and brand new Trinity Leeds. The Corn Exchange is home to a range of creative, innovative and independent retailers and is located opposite Europe's largest covered market, Leeds City Market.
