Dr Damien Harron

  • Curriculum Leader for Classical Music

  • Damien is a co-founder of BackBeat Percussion Quartet with which he has received numerous awards including the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Prize (UK), the Concert Artists Guild Prize (USA) and the Gold medal at the Osaka Chamber Music Festa (Japan).


  • As a conductor, Damien also works in the sphere of new music. Highlights include the conducting of a broadcast on Danish National Radio from the Spor Festival, Aarhus in 2006

  • Damien is an active researcher, having recently completed a translation of one of the major works by the renowned French composer, George Aperghis.

  • Damien has made recordings for Mode, NMC, NonClassical and Tzadik labels among others.

 

Alfia Nakipbekova

  • Principal Lecturer in Cello and Chamber Ensembles

  • Originally from Kazakhstan, she studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire with Mstislav Rostropovich. She also received a series of masterclasses with Soviet cello legend Daniil Shafran and, later in London, with Jacqueline Du Pré. 

  • As a concerto soloist, recitalist and a founder member of The Bekova Trio, Alfia has made numerous critically acclaimed recordings and appearances at festivals and recitals all over the world.

  • Alfia is a Founder and Artistic Director of two chamber groups: contemporary cello quartet, Cellorhythmics, and a new music ensemble, WCMO (Working Classical Music Orchestra), which brings together musicians from different musical backgrounds and disciplines.

  • Alfia is currently researching for her PhD thesis at the University of Leeds, exploring 20th century cello technique and performance practice.

 

Nico de Villiers

  • Senior Lecturer in Piano at Leeds College of Music.

  • Nico is a soloist, accompanist and coach in the UK as well as abroad

  • A passionate collaborator in chamber music and found the De Villiers Ensemble in Sweden that annually performs a series of concerts across Sweden.

  • Nico has worked as music coach for singers for the past six years and has established strong ties with institutions both in the UK as well as America, Sweden, Austria and South Africa.

 

Jakob Fichert

  • Senior Lecturer in Piano

  • A very sought after performer playing solo and chamber music recitals in the UK, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Lithuania and other European countries

  • As a concerto soloist, recitalist and a founder member of The Bekova Trio, Alfia has made numerous critically acclaimed recordings and appearances at festivals and recitals all over the world.

  • He has been involved in various projects giving lecture recitals on the subject of piano and chamber works by Max Reger and initiating contemporary music recitals, combining established 20th century composers with newly commissioned works for solo piano and chamber ensembles.

  • Jakob has won numerous prizes at international competitions both as a soloist and chamber musician. These include the Valentino Bucchi International Piano Competition for 20th century music in Rome, the Liza Fuchsowa Memorial Prize at the Royal-Over-Seas-League – best chamber music pianist, and the International Taneev Chamber Music Competition in Kaluga and Moscow.
