Get the best out of the library over the summer

Here are some of our top tips for using the library services and resources over the summer:

Library vacation opening hours

The library is open over the summer period; please see below for vacation opening.

*The Library will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 2015

Monday - Thursday - 08:45 - 17:00
Friday - 08:45 - 16:30
Sat & Sun - Closed

If the library is closed you can return your items via the library returns box located on level 2 next to the lift.

Summer loans

If you are a returning student in September, all loans renewed or issued now can be kept over the Summer, and returned by Thursday 24th September.

Request an item to order

If you require an item for your course on your return in September and the library doesn't currently have it, you can request an item for the library to purchase over the Summer.

Access E-Resources from Home


Naxos Music Library is the world´s largest online classical music library. Currently, it offers streaming access to more than 80,952 CDs with more than 1,162,893 tracks, standard and rare repertoire. Over 1000 new CDs are added to the library every month. The contents can be searched by composer, work, genre and label; by keyword search and by a sophisticated advanced search engine with up to 11 combined search criteria. In addition to allowing subscribers to listen to recordings, NML provides liner notes for most recordings.


Rock's Backpages is the biggest online database of rock music writing in the world. It is a unique resource unavailable elsewhere online.

Sourced from the pages of the music and mainstream press, it is a massive library of articles (reviews, interviews, features and more) from the early 1960s right up to the present day. Publications include: NME, Melody Maker, Q, i-D, Rolling Stone, Livewire...Find a comprehensive list here.

In addition to the archive of text articles, they are now adding unedited mp3 audio files of original source interviews.

Music Week is a trade paper for the UK record industry where you can keep up to date with all the news, data, analysis and opinion throughout the music business industry

Students and Staff now have full access to the Music Week website which includes:

  • Publishing - weekly news and market data

  • Live - weekly news and market data and charts

  • More news pages covering Labels, TV and radio

  • Features - regular focuses on Publishing and Live plus many more

  • Predictive charts - what is being ordered.

  • Exclusive Weekly airplay charts from Nielsen Music Control

  • Weekly sales charts form the Official Charts Company

  • Daily News updates - via the Music Week Daily newsletter

  • The Official Charts Company midweek sales charts - updated every day between Tuesday and Friday

  • Premium chart search - 2 years charts archive

  • Access to more than 90 different sales, airplay charts

  • Online Music Week Directory - The bible of who's who in the industry

  • Playlists - the ones to watch and hear.

Get access to a library near you!

If you are a HE or Postgraduate student you may be able to get access to other academic libraries while you are at home via the SCONUL Access and SCONUL access vacation schemes.

Have you finished reading a book and you want to pass it on? Or you’re a book-lover who fancies a new read? The library is pleased to announce the new book swap service; Read It, Swap it! Bring along any books you have finished reading to the library and swap with another, for free!

The service will officially start in August 2015 and is open to both staff and students. So what are you waiting for?

More than just books!

Music Streaming Sites

The Library subscribe to many music streaming sites such as Naxos, Alexander Street Press and Desktop DJ where you can listen to 1000s of multi genre sound recordings, create your own play lists and listen on the go.

Electronic Text

The library subscribe to electronic text databases such as JSTOR, Rock's Backpages, Music, EBSCO Journals, Myilibrary and Grove Music Online. The majority of databases have offsite access meaning you can read E-Books and Journal articles from the comfort of home.

Jazz Archive

The library is home to the Conservatoires's Jazz Archive, opened by Digby Fairweather in 1990, which holds original manuscripts, printed music and valuable collections of biographical files as well as a wide range of recordings.
