Sam Sweeney's Folk Masterclass

Ahead of the launch of our Folk Music degree, we invited professional folk musician Sam Sweeney to deliver a masterclass for our students.

Sam Sweeney is one of the most respected musicians on the British folk scene, a multi-instrumentalist best known for his part in folk-fusion band Bellowhead. Having played the fiddle since he was six, he has gone on to become one of the key players in the current resurgence in English instrumental music.  He won the BBC Folk Musician of the Year Award in 2015, and has recently been appointed as Artistic Director for the National Youth Folk Ensemble.

Joined by an enthusiastic troupe of Jazz and Classical students, Sam brought a traditional folk tune to collaborate with, fusing genres and creating a new instrumental interpretation of a traditional piece.

Take a look at our film which captures the masterclass, and Sam’s thoughts on the British folk scene, teaching folk music, and where it could go next…
