Enhanced double bass study with a hand-made Professor

New double bass from Thomas & George Martin

This year as part of the regular re-stocking of instruments and equipment at Leeds College of Music, we were very excited to purchase a hand-made Professor model double bass from the world-renowned string instrument company Thomas & George Martin.

Craftsmen Thomas & George Martin are a family-run business based in rural Oxfordshire, and have been making top quality double basses for over 30 years. The Professor model is a solid wood instrument, made to their own design and specifications using best quality maple and spruce. Attention is paid to shaping the neck and fingerboard ensuring maximum playability, and resulting in a warm and responsive sound.

Leeds College of Music Jazz specialist and Principal Lecturer Zoltan Dekany is a Thomas & George Martin endorsed artist, sharing the prestigious status with musicians such as John Patitucci and Martin Rosso. As a younger musician Zoltan was a student of Charlie Haden. He now performs regularly with the BBC Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as being a side-man to some of the most prolific jazz artists on the scene.

Currently there are around 20 double bass students studying at Leeds College of Music, under the influence of such tutors as Zoltan. Jazz Pathway Leader, Jamil Sheriff said: “We’re very lucky to have him!”.

And the conservatoire is very lucky to have purchased such a great double bass too; giving the students regular access to this level of instrument is key to their development, and further enhances delivery of tuition at this world-class conservatoire.
