Third year Popular Music Student Lauren Rycroft joins our official showcase on The Cavern Stage at Sound City in Liverpool.
Last year saw Lauren support Newton Faulkner, meanwhile building a firm following in the North – gaining support from BBC Introducing West Yorkshire, Lincoln and Nottingham.
We had a chat with Lauren to get her take on playing this year’s Sound City…
How does it feel to be chosen for Sound City?
Pretty exciting, I have wanted to attend for years so to be able to play it is even better!
How do you think Sound City will differ from other shows that you have done?
I feel there will be a bigger mix of people watching because of the community nature of metropolitan festivals, it is more likely for people to discover new music as they explore the city.
How and why did you get into music, and why is it so important to you?
I stumbled upon Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ vinyl when I was exploring my attic at 17, and I feel like that was the first time I had ever really listened and appreciated good music. That album sort of released something in me and I started teaching myself guitar to accompany the poems I would write. Writing music is now my sole outlet of emotional expression and I feel more whole as a person as a result.
What can we expect from your live show at Sound City?
There will be lots of emotion and honesty, twinkly guitars and dark lyrics...
Any other bands you’re keen to see, and why?
I discovered Pumarosa when I played Dot to Dot Festival in Nottingham last year and I was mesmerised – they are captivating. Also, The Kooks of course - so I can feel nostalgic and rock out like my teenage self again.
What are you looking forward to most about your performance?
Seeing everyone’s faces and meeting new people who feel something for my music!
Lauren plays the Leeds College of Music official showcase at Sound City, Saturday 27th May 12pm-3pm.
