Leeds International Pianoforte Competition

Partnership News

The partnership between Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and Leeds College of Music provides specialist support for the world-renowned competition’s participants.

Leeds College of Music (LCoM), situated in the Quarry Hill cultural quarter of Leeds, provides invaluable rehearsal space for the competition’s high-calibre pianists.

Competitors are able to take advantage of LCoM’s soundproofed rehearsal rooms as well as their large collection of fine pianos. Over 95% of the conservatoire’s pianos are from the Steinway family, making it the only All-Steinway conservatoire in England.

Leeds College of Music Fellow, the inimitable Dame Fanny Waterman, founded the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1963 and now sits as Chairman of the jury in this year’s prestigious event. When the conservatoire was awarded All-Steinway status in 2011, Dame Fanny was present to hear 40 of the instruments played simultaneously.

Competitors have returned to perform at the conservatoire’s state-of-the-art concert space, The Venue, including 1978 prize-winner Kathy Stott who performed with cellist Giovanni Sollima in November 2014.

Leeds College of Music Principal, Gerry Godley commented “we’re honoured to be a vital part of this iconic  competition which supports, as we do, the development of  musical talent. Giving competitors the opportunity to rehearse on our Steinways is of great importance to us. They have animated our building this last week, and Leeds can anticipate some spectacular playing as the competition progresses.”

The Competition is held every three years and the two finals in Leeds Town Hall are televised by BBC 4 and broadcast by BBC Radio 3.

Tickets (£5 - £39.50) for the Competition are available the Leeds Town Hall website or by telephone: 0113 224 3801.
