In October, we were lucky enough to be part of the team of Leeds organisations chosen to delivery 1Xtra's outreach programme to emerging musicians across the city.
Alongside Leeds Beckett, Studio 12, Phoenix Dance, Seven Arts, and Bradford College who hosted the full 1Xtra Academy, we delivered panels and workshops on career development, Women in Music, songwriting and music making, and dance. Music and media industry professionals joined in the sessions, with Sir David Rodigan, Yasmin Evans, TV producer Chris Fry, Jamz Supernova, Charlie Sloth and DJ Adele Roberts to name a few.
The sessions also gave up-and-coming musicians the opportunity to perform in front of large audiences, with singer Empress Imani, MC Dialect, and our own production student Weezy Jefferson taking the stage at the events.
Our venue was filled with people from across Leeds and the UK for the ‘Making Money from Music’ session, which saw 1Xtra names like DJ Target and Twin B, sit on panels alongside PRS, station manager Austin Daboh and our own students to discuss artist development and audience engagement.
The post-event networking opportunities proved to be a great success, allowing everyone to talk about music and share ideas, and follow up on hot debates from the sessions.
This video is a round-up of the outcome…
The 1Xtra Live Sessions all led up to the 1Xtra Live event, at Leeds' fd arena on 17 october 2015.
