Auditions open for LCoM Generation Big Band

Leeds College of Music is calling for young jazz musicians to take part in a brand new project, Generation Big Band. The innovative program will bring together three generations of the Yorkshire jazz community, where LCoM alumni, current students and up and coming young musicians will perform together as a band for the first time.
As part of the band formation, LCoM is seeking six talented young musicians up to the age of 18 to join the project. The auditions will take place on Saturday 26 November, between 2.30pm and 4.30pm at The Venue, within LCoM’s main Quarry Hill campus.
The selected musicians will join alumni who are working professionally in the music industry and current LCoM conservatoire students to form a jazz big band. Using cutting edge arrangements, the band will learn and perform together during the project, which begins in January 2017.
The project will be led by LCoM Jazz Trumpet lecturer Mark Chandler, who is one of the UK’s leading jazz musicians. Having spent a successful career as both a creative artist and a session musician, he has worked with the BBC Big Band and artists such as Rob McConnell, Jonny Dankworth,  Shirley Bassey, The Pogues, and Gladys Knight and the Pips.
Chandler says; “We are very excited to bring together three different generations of talent from the Yorkshire jazz community for the first time. This is a great opportunity for the personal and professional development of our current students and alumni, whilst also reaching out to exciting, up and coming young musicians. Through this three-tiered approach, we aim to showcase the best of the best within regional jazz talent.”
Auditionees will be asked to play as part of a small ensemble along with a rhythm section of LCoM students.  Rhythm section auditionees will play as part of a rhythm section.  Music will be provided to read, including a chord progression to improvise over.
