Entry requirements

Musical, academic and English criteria for international students

Here are full details of the entry requirements for our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Entry requirements by programme

BA Music - all pathways

Academic Requirements for 2017 entry

A strong academic record is required to secure a place at Leeds College of Music. We require UK students to obtain 96 UCAS tariff points, or CCC at A-Level, normally including a grade C or above in Music (Music is not a required subject for applicants to Music Business).

International students study a wide range of curriculums, so upon receiving your application we will individually assess whether your qualifications are equivalent to the necessary number of UCAS tariff points.

Musical Requirements for 2017 entry

  • Success at audition/interview.

  • For Classical, Jazz, Folk and Popular Music, Grade 8 standard in your specialist instrument/voice (assessed at audition).

  • For Songwriting, Grade 6 standard in your specialist instrument/voice (assessed at audition).

  • For Classical and Jazz, Grade 5 Theory (ABRSM or equivalent).

  • For Popular Music, Production and Film Music and Songwriting, relevant theory knowledge will be required, which will be tested at audition/interview.

All international students must note our Secure English Language Testing (SELT) requirements below.

4 Year BA degrees

Our degrees in Classical, Film Music, Jazz, Songwriting and Popular Music are offered with an integrated foundation year. If you want to take this route and study for 4 years rather than 3, then the entry requirements differ from the 3 year BA as follows:

  • For all courses, academic requirements are slightly lower, with 64 UCAS tariff points or equivalent needed, usually including Music.

  • For Classical, Jazz, and Popular Music, Grade 6 standard in your principal instrument/voice (assessed at audition)

All other entry requirements are the same as the 3 year version of the relevant course, including Theory exams and English requirements.

Professional experience can be taken into account as part of the applications process and all suitable applicants are invited for interview and/or audition. English as a Foreign Language

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their English language proficiency, as will students who require a Tier 4 Visa to study .

The two accepted English tests for Tier 4 visa purposes are IELTS for UKVI (Academic) and Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (Trinity ISE). Please use these as our entry requirement guidelines even if you do not require a visa. The table below details the minimum score neccesary in the accepted tests:

IELTS for UKVI
(Academic)
Trinity College London
Integrated Skills in English, levels II or III

Score 6.0 overall with a minimum score of 5.5 in each part of the test

Take both modules (Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening) in one sitting, and pass both

English language tests for visa purposes can only be taken at approved centres, and not every centre advertising these tests is approved. Please note that Trinity ISE exams can only be taken in the UK. Click here to see where you should take IELTS for UKVI (Academic) or Trinity ISE.

If you do not require a visa, please check the IELTS or Trinity College London websites.

Students who require a Tier 4 Visa are strongly advised to check all English language requirements on the UK Visas and Immigration website. Here, you can also find important information on the visa application process.

If you are from a majority English language speaking country you will not have to pass the English language requirement outlined above. This may also be the case if you are from the European Economic Area and have passed an academic qualification in English, usually of degree level standard although successful completion of the Norwegian high school English curriculum is also sufficient.

English language requirements are normally exempted for nationals of the following countries:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • The Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Canada
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • St Kitts and Nevis

Your nationality will be confirmed by UK Visas and Immigration using your passport.
